Earthing and Grounding

Earthing and Grounding
A reader recently inquired about an holistic practice commonly referred to as “earthing” or “grounding”. The question was a like a portal to my past. I was first exposed to the concepts behind this therapy when I studied holistic medicine in Arizona many years ago. In essence, grounding is, supposedly, a therapeutic process by which you connect with the earth. A popular theory behind its reputed healing power is that electrons present in the earth’s surface can be passed on to physical bodies when a person walks barefoot or sleeps on the natural ground. An expert in the field of earthing, Dr. James L. Oschman, describes the exchange in this way, “The most reasonable hypothesis to explain the beneficial effects of earthing is that a direct earth connection enables both diurnal (daily) electrical rhythms and free electrons to flow from the earth to the body”. Hypothesis and proposed mechanisms are helpful as far as they go. But the real question in my mind is whether there’s any serious science that supports these assertions and the many claims made by purveyors of grounding products.

The first question that logically comes to mind is why an influx of electrons would have a beneficial effect in the human body. Dr. Oschman believes that direct exposure to the earth’s electrical rhythms may help promote a normalizing effect on hormone production, sleep patterns and stress levels. An interesting side note is an additional theory that “free and mobile electrons from the earth can resolve chronic inflammation by serving as natural antioxidants”. If accurate, these biochemical changes could obviously provide far reaching benefits for much of the world’s population. (1,2,3)
I was able to locate two peer review, published studies on grounding – one from January 2010 and another from October 2004. These scientific inquiries were conducted by two separate research facilities and were deemed worthy enough to be printed in a reputable medical publication, The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. The results of the following scientific trials will be the primary basis for my opinion of earthing.
A total of 28 men and women took part in the most recent study of a grounding device. Their ages ranged from 18 – 80 years old. The controlled trial used a double-blind protocol which means that both the participants and the researchers didn’t know when they were using the experimental device or the inactive/placebo device.
  • The study volunteers were asked to sit on a standard reclining chair or one that was fitted with (hidden) grounding technology – which is typically made of metallic yarn.
  • Measurements were taken before, during and after “treatment” that indicated changes in blood oxygenation, pulse rate, perfusion index, respiratory rate and skin conductance.
When the participants were resting on the grounded recliner chair, they exhibited a decrease in skin conductance (an indicator of stress reduction) and an increase in respiratory rate. There were also significant changes noted in blood oxygenation during grounding, shifts in perfusion index (circulation) and pulse rates. Collectively, these responses were suggestive that “Grounding could become important for relaxation, health maintenance and disease prevention”. Additional research was urged by the authors of the study. (4)
An 8 week trial from 2004 examined the effects of a grounding bed in 12 volunteers suffering from pain, sleep disturbance and stress. The bedding used in the trial was described as “using a conductive mattress pad”. Multiple saliva samples were taken at the beginning and at week 6 of the experiment testing for concentrations of cortisol, a stress hormone. Questionnaires were also employed to determine subjective changes in pain, sleep quality and stress levels. Both daytime and nighttime cortisol levels declined significantly after sleeping on the grounded bed. A trend toward normalization of 24 hour cortisol levels was noted overall. The volunteers reported that virtually all of the pain, sleep and stress symptoms were greatly improved or eliminated by the 8 week point. It’s also interesting to note that the female participants appeared to benefit the most from this therapy. The reason why unclear at this time. (5)

Right about now, some of you may be rolling your eyes in disbelief. I do realize that earthing may seem like a rather “new agey” sort of practice. The use of a grounding bed or chair may, in fact, fall into this category. But, in my opinion, the idea of re-connecting with the ground isn’t so far fetched. Human beings haven’t been wearing tennis shoes and sleeping on NASA tested foam bedding for all that long a period of time. These inventions are certainly useful, but they’re far from natural. I’m not suggesting that we all ditch our clothes, mattresses and sneakers and reclaim a stone age way of living. But I think it’s important to remember that there may be some positive practices from our distant past that can be applied to the present. One example is walking barefoot when it’s practical and safe. Beyond any possible grounding effect, walking with bare feet can promote healthier feet and joints. (6,7,8)
I’m going to adopt a “wait and see” attitude about grounding products. There’s a hint of promise there as indicated by the apparently real physiological changes brought about by said products. But that’s about all that can currently be said on their behalf. The many distributor and manufacturer claims far exceed what is verifiably documented in the scientific literature. For the time being, I would feel much more comfortable recommending spending more time in contact with the ground in a natural setting – lying down or walking barefoot in the park or at the beach, etc. If this topic interests you, consider trying it out for yourself. See how non-commercial grounding makes you feel. The worst case scenario is that you’ll probably expose yourself to more fresh air and sunshine. Fortunately, that’s not a side effect that warrants much concern.
Be well!

The Importance of Grounding Yourself Using David Wolf's Grounding Technologies

What Does Grounding Technology Do?

First of all, what does “being grounded” mean?

Being grounded means being electrically connected to the earth.
barefoot technologyMost of us is not aware that the earth is mobilised with free anti-oxidant electrons.  Those electrons pour into our body at the speed of light, the minute we touch the earth barefoot.

This discovery was made during the telegraph days when they were first putting telegraph wires into the earth and they found out that the earth was completely covered by electrons that were negatively charged and that prevented oxidation.

When we are disconnected from that natural negative charge then we are more subject to oxidation and we develop more inflammatory problems.

A group of scientists and a team of doctors have been looking at every biological marker known to man, the major ones in medicine - they include cortisol levels, bilirubin levels, heart rate levels, heart rate variability, respiration levels, white blood cell levels etc. - then they tried determining if there is a difference between being grounded (meaning standing directly on the earth barefoot or touching the earth someway with our bare skin) and not being grounded (meaning wearing rubber soled sneakers, or something).  The answer is yes.  There is a massive difference in ALL biological markers between being grounded and being ungrounded.

This has got to be the most significant descovery in health in the last 10 years.  This is perhaps the most significant discovery in health, period.  What it is indicating is that the assumption that it’s okay to wear shoes all the time, the assumption that it’s okay to walk in houses that are carpeted, that are insulated with linoleum, that are insulated with dry wood floors, is just an assumption, it is not upheld by the scientific research.

grounding technologyThe earth itself is negatively charged and the atmosphere around us is positively charged.  Most of the conditions that we know of today, whatever that condition is, is associated with having an excess of positive charge in our body.  What that really means is a lack of electrons.
When we have an excess positive charge, there is too much oxidation, there’s free radical damage and there’s a stealing of electrons.  That means we lack electrons when we are oxidised.
By being insulated from the earth through the rubber soles of our shoes, what ends up happening is that we become more subject to free radical damage and we age faster.

So what can we do to stop it?
The more that you can be connected, directly via the skin, to the earth, the longer you will live and the less inflammation you will suffer from.  One minute is better than zero minutes.  15 minutes is better than nothing, an hour is better than 15 minutes, 5 hours is better than 1 hour, 10 hours is better than 5 hours etc.  You get the idea, the more you can be grounded, the better.

When we are touching the ground we are actually grounded, but it has to be an electrical connection to the earth. If you know anything about electricity you will know that electricity does not conduct through certain mediums, like rubber, and rubber stops the electrical impulses coming up through the earth.

This entire idea of the way we have developed shoes, and the advance of shoe technology since at least the 1960’s, has had a catastrophic effect on the human physiology and a catastrophic effect on our health, and it appears, based on the latest research, to be the fundamental cause of advanced chronic inflammation.
This discovery is so profound.

There has been quite a lot of research done on athletes, and what they have found is that the best athletes in the world are surfers.  Whenever you are in a body of water, like the ocean, you are instantly grounded.
grounded by oceanMaybe you’ve found out for yourself this effect.  Maybe sometime when you’ve had a lot of emotional turmoil going on, or a bunch of erratic thoughts going on, and suddenly you’ve jumped in the ocean and boom, it’s all gone.  That’s grounding.  Whenever we jump into a body of water, like a river or a stream or a lake, the same thing happens, we are instantly grounded.

If we walk barefoot on sand, we’re instantly grounded.  When someone goes to the beach and they lay out their towels and lie on the beach, they usually feel like falling asleep.  This is because the grounding effect changes our respiration rate and immediately detoxifies us and normalises our pH, making us relax.  The effects of body pH’s by being grounded is substantial.  It normalises our pH.

If you are unaware what pH means, it is the acid/alkaline balance.  Hyperacidity has been associated with a number of disorders.  Hyperacidity IMPROVES, meaning alkalinity is restored once we begin to ground ourselves.

If you walk barefoot on the soil, if you walk barefoot in the rain, if you walk barefoot on the sand, walk barefoot through puddles etc., you are grounded.  Some cement is grounded, but some isn’t, this is because of the polymers in new cement and that may be acting as an insulator, but in general, especially old cement is grounded.  It is conducting energies through itself from the inner earth, up into you.  Once again, these energies are free mobile anti-oxidant electrons that help your body resist oxidation, keeping you younger.

If you touch a tree, you are grounded, because the tree is a living wood, it has electrolytes and water in it and therefore it is
conducting electricity and yes it can make you grounded.  If you touch a metal pole that is stuck in the earth, you are grounded.
These are effects that you begin to notice and they have important side effects and that is they can actually protect you from free radical damage as already mentioned AND excessive EMF exposure.  They drop the EMF field that is hitting your body, when you are grounded.  When you are grounded, you are more resistant to EMF fields, because the EMF hits you and goes right into the ground.
The earth itself is an infinite reservoir for EMF fields, that’s why
it’s called “ground”.  The earth can absorb an infinite amount of EMF.  If we are in a rubber soled shoe, and we’re on a cell phone, we are oxidizing ourselves and damaging ourselves with very high frequency EMF’s.  But if we’re on our cell phone and we are barefoot, we are not completely protected, but we are DRAMATICALLY more protected.  That’s important to understand.

It is believed that a huge body of our neurological disturbances are caused by being isolated from the earth’s EMF field, from being ungrounded and wearing rubber soles.
david wolfe and grounding technology
The rubber sole, because it isolates us from the earth, actually may be the cause of our philosophical lonliness - once we get our shoes off and connect back with the earth as much as possible, whether it’s just 5 minutes a day in the park, or just walking on the grass, or walking on the beach every day, or going swimming in a lake or ocean.
The more you are grounded, the better you will feel, and very likely the longer you will live, based on the research, and the lower your inflammation and pain will be.

Pain, of the chronic sort, is associated with excess POSITIVE charge. The earth, again, is NEGATIVELY charged.  When we stand on it barefoot we absorb that negative charge, and it immediately begins to wash away the positive charge.  It starts to add electrons to that positive charge and within 50 minutes our pain can dissipate.  What a dramatic discovery.

Being grounded immediately alters our pulse rate, our respiratory rate, blood oxygenation, changes our skin to conductants within 40 minutes.  Improvements are seen all over those areas. Most of us like to spend our vacation time on the beach for a reason and the reason is because we are reconnecting back to the earth itself.

Our direct skin connection to the earth is one of the most important “foods” that we can take in.  It may be more important than food.  Because if we get far enough away from the earth’s EMF field, up in outer space, we immediately start demineralising.  Research now is indicating that connection to the earth helps re-mineralise.

Problems with mineralisation, problems with bones, with teeth, are related to not being grounded.
When you want to elecroplate a substance, for example you want to put copper onto another metal, you want to electroplate it, you have to remove electrons so that they stick together, so that the 2 metals SHARE electrons.  That’s kind of what happens when we become oxidozed - we no longer have ENOUGH electrons and therefore our tissues have to share electrons and then we become easily oxidized.

barefoot grounding technology
Our teeth, if they lack electrons, will then begin to share electrons with plaque and the plaque electroplates itself to our teeth.  Immediate improvements have been seen with dental health, simply by being grounded.
The earth itself is a reference point for all circadian rhythms in our body. For example, when we get in a car, the car is not grounded - it is on rubber tyres, so it is not connected to the earth and hence we are ungrounded.  We drive to some other location and we get out of the car, well there’s a little bit of a jet lag even from driving around in a car.  If we stand barefoot for 15 minutes wherever we have arrived, we re-calibrate to the circadian rhythms of the earth where we are and the jetlag goes away.

A similar phenomenon has been noted when you fly an aeroplane.  If you get out of the aeroplane and take off your shoes and your socks and you directly connect your skin to the earth, within 15 minutes you can dissipate the EMF fields you have picked up, the radiation you have picked up, from being up in the upper atmosphere, (you are in a giant metal cylinder that’s attracting gamma rays and UV radiation - we can get 10 to 100 times the radiation up there than we do down here)and you come back into the electrical potential if the earth and you absorb frequencies out of the earth that tells your body where you are and what’s going on.
The circadian rhythm piece of this puzzle is profound because it affects cortisol levels - this has been proven, it has been scientifically and medically documented.

Within 8 weeks of being grounded, cortisol levels are improved.  The ryhthm of cortisol in the body is improved.  Disturbances in cortisol levels are eradicated. The same can be said with hormone levels.  Erratic fluctuations in hormone levels.  This is because these 2 things respond to circadian rhythms.  Circadian rhythms being biological clocks, rhythms that we have inside ourselves.

When we are in rubber soled shoes, when we are ungrounded, our body has no ability to access the referenced circadian rhythms, the frequencies that are coming out of the earth.  Our body attunes to those like Greenwich Mean Time, it’s kind of like a clock on the wall, it goes out of balance after a while, it goes a bit faster or a bit slower and every now and then we have to actually bring it back to the Greenwich Mean Time, so we know exactly what time it is.

When we’re dealing with going back onto the earth, that’s really what’s happening.  Our body resets itself.  Make sure you take the time this summer to do that.  Get reset by getting grounded.  Get barefoot and get your hands into the earth.  Get to the beach, get in the ocean or jump in a lake, and immediately you will notice these benefits.

There’s a really good  grounding technology video that explains all this in detail.  It’s not long, less than 20 minutes.  It’s made by David Wolfe, our planet’s leading nutritionist and health guru.  It is something we all need to know about to protect our health and to eradicate pain and inflammation from our lives. Be sure to check it out and remember, start going barefoot as much as you can, another plus is that it feels great too!
David Wolfe has created a brand new program called  Longevity Now where he covers not only technologies and tools for grounding yourself, but also how to ramp up your immune system, how to turn back the clock on aging and how to put no only the years back in your life, but also put the life back in your years by reducing pain and inflammation in  your body, so you can feel younger and be able to do all the things you used to do years ago.  It really is possible, to find out more, visit the Longevity Now Program.

German Doctors unite on RF health effects

Open letter to Edmund Stoiber, president of the federal state of Bavaria, Germany

Dr Edmund Stoiber
State Chancelry
PO Box 220011
80535 Munich

Urgent suspicions of serious health damage from pulsed high frequency electromagnetic fields (mobile phone base stations, DECT phones, W-LAN, Bluetooth etc.) at levels below exposure guidelines.

Dear Prime Minister,

Allow me to represent many doctors personally to you.
For eight months doctors in Oberfranken and another places have been making extremely worrying observations of patients, who live in the vicinity of mobile phone base stations. After initial suspicions at locations in Forchheim, Hirschaid, Walsdorf, Memmelsdorf and Bamberg survey measurements were made of 356 such residents in 40 locations, all in Oberfranken. Meanwhile 64 Hofer doctors, 30 Lichtenfelser, 61 Coburger, 20 from Bayreuth and countrywide, added their names to the Bamberger appeal.

The result all these medical findings is as follows.
Many people have become ill with a characteristic combination of symptoms, which is new to us as doctors, at exposure levels far below the guideline limits, which apply only to thermal effects. Residents in the vicinity of masts have one or more of the following symptoms:
Sleep disturbance, tiredness, headache, restlessness, lethargy, irritability, inability to concentrate, forgetfulness, trouble finding words, depressive tendency, noises in the ears, impaired hearing, dizziness, nosebleeds, visual disturbances, frequent infections, sinusitis, joint and muscle pains, feeling deaf, palpitations, increased blood pressure, hormone disturbances, gaining weight, hair loss, nocturnal sweating, nausea.
The following statements strengthened our suspicions:
  • Frequently, many residents become sick with these symptoms at the same time, when living near a base station
(e.g. Schweinfurt: Eselshöhe, in Kulmbach: Senioren-Wohnanlage Mainpark, in Hof: Kösseinestraße, in Forchheim: Ortsteil Burk).
  • Many patients have reported rapid recovery when removed from exposure (by temporary relocation, removal of the source, screening, disconnection).
  • After relocation, doctors have proven during re-examination of the patients, among other things, that blood pressure, heart rhythm, hormone disturbances, visual disturbances, neurological symptoms, and blood profile have returned to normal.
  • Many doctors’ families have in the course of the last months removed their DECT phones and were thereafter free among other things from headache, concentration disturbances, dizziness, restlessness, tinnitus, and sleep disturbance.
We therefore requested the responsible authorities (Federal Office for Radiation Protection, Federal Ministry for the Environment, Conservation and Nuclear Safety, members of the Radiation Protection Commission and the WHO) to organise local health surveys. Despite the serious, medical concern, all the authorities have refused to investigate the (to some degree) intolerable living conditions of those living locally.
Not one official health survey has been made at any base station in Germany! The SSK and the BfS have thus no level of knowledge concerning the long-term effects on resident living in the vicinity. From a medical viewpoint is this unacceptable.
I therefore turn to you to request your assistance for our patients who have no other recourse. We doctors from Oberfranken are ready to help. We urge you to immediately arrange local health surveys among people in the vicinity of base stations, at locations in Bavaria. Our concern is not that there are 'unfortunate individual cases', but that there is a medical disaster spreading to all parts of the population! To investigate our concerns, it must also be possible to switch transmitters off. From a medical viewpoint, we are seeing an emergency situation, which requires rapid action by all political means.
I implore you to take action to avoid health damage among many children, young people and adults.

Faithfully

Insurance companies do not cover health damage caused by mobile technologies + Disconnect

CBC National, Canada, 22nd September 2010

Two of the world's largest insurance companies, Lloyds and Swiss Re, have recommended to other insurance companies to write in exclusion clauses against paying compensation for illnesses caused by continuous long-term non-ionising radiation exposure.[1,2] . The recent Austrian insurance company AUVA report just confirms this.
Update 24th September: This is bad news for those employers who expose their workers heavily to non-ionising radiation. Precedents: There are already several cases where the worker got compensation because their tumours etc were caused by mobile phone & other occupational EMF exposure [1,2,3,4,5] . And the amount of cases will most likely increase rapidly.
Disconnect BTW, I had an interesting Skype with Devra (Davis) yesterday.
Her new book 'Disconnect' talks about this insurance dilemma and many other interesting topics.
The book is worth reading. Please, get your copy.

The Venice Resolution

The Venice Resolution
Initiated by the International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety,
June 6, 2008.

As stated in the Benevento Resolution of September 2006, we remain concerned about the effects of human exposure to electromagnetic fields on health. At the Venice Workshop, entitled, “Foundations of bioelectromagnetics: towards a new rationale for risk assessment and management,” we discussed electro-hypersensitivity, blood brain barrier changes, learning and behavioral effects, changes in anti-oxidant enzyme activities, DNA damage, biochemical mechanisms of interaction, biological damage and, experimental approaches to validate these effects.  As an outcome, we are compelled to confirm the existence of non-thermal effects of electromagnetic fields on living matter, which seem to occur at every level of investigation from molecular to epidemiological.
An urgent task before international researchers is to discover the detailed mechanisms of non-thermal interactions between electromagnetic fields and living matter. A collateral consequence will be the design of new general public and occupational protection standards. We, who are at the forefront of this research, encourage an ethical approach in setting of exposure standards which protect the health of all, including those who are more vulnerable. We recognize the need for research to reveal the critical exposure parameters of effect and risk from exposure to electromagnetic fields.

The non-ionizing radiation protection standards recommended by international standards organizations, and supported by the World Health Organization, are inadequate. Existing guidelines are based on results from acute exposure studies and only thermal effects are considered. A world wide application of the Precautionary Principle is required. In addition, new standards should be developed to take various physiological conditions into consideration, e.g., pregnancy, newborns, children, and elderly people.

We take exception to the claim of the wireless communication industry that there is no credible scientific evidence to conclude there a risk. Recent epidemiological evidence is stronger than before, which is a further reason to justify precautions be taken to lower exposure standards in accordance with the Precautionary Principle.
We recognize the growing public health problem known as electrohypersensitivity; that this adverse health condition can be quite disabling; and, that this condition requires further urgent investigation and recognition.
We strongly advise limited use of cell phones, and other similar devices, by young children and teenagers, and we call upon governments to apply the Precautionary Principle as an interim measure while more biologically relevant standards are developed to protect against, not only the absorption of electromagnetic energy by the head, but also adverse effects of the signals on biochemistry, physiology and electrical biorhythms.

New research: Electropollution can cause diabetes (type-3)

Thursday, June 10, 2010
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

(NaturalNews) Most people are familiar with type-1 diabetes and type-2 diabetes, but did you know researchers have discovered a third type of diabetes? Type-3 diabetes, as they are calling it, affects people who are extra sensitive to electrical devices that emit "dirty" electricity.

Type-3 diabetics actually experience spikes in blood sugar and an increased heart rate when exposed to electrical pollution ("electropollution") from things like computers, televisions, cordless and mobile phones, and even compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Dr. Magda Havas, a PhD from Trent University in Canada, recently published the results of a study she conducted on the relationship between electromagnetic fields and diabetes in Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine. In it, she explains how she and her team came to discover this about why electropollution is so dangerous for many people.

Blood sugar goes haywire

One of the most interesting finding in her study was that electro-sensitive people whose blood sugar decreases when they go for a walk outdoors actually experience an increase in blood sugar when walking on a treadmill.

Treadmills, you see, are electrical devices that emit electrical pollution. But interestingly, even the physical exertion of walking on the treadmill did not make up for the blood sugar spiking effect of the EMFs emitted by the treadmills. Despite the exercise, in other words, type-3 diabetics experienced significant spikes in blood sugar when walking on the treadmill.

Dirty electricity is bad for everyone, but it is especially bad for people who are type-3 diabetics. And Dr. Havas explains in her study that even having an electrical device plugged into the wall near someone who is type-3 diabetic can cause them problems.

We have to rethink environmental influences of modern living

I find this research fascinating, not only because it proves that electromagnetic waves impact blood sugar and heart rate, but because there could be thousands, if not millions, of diabetics who may be suffering from a diabetes misdiagnosis right now.

The reason I'm bringing this up is because a 54 year-old pre-diabetic man who participated in the study was found to experience serious blood sugar spikes only when he was working in an urban environment around power lines or on his computer. When he was out camping away from the city, his blood sugar was just fine.

The man tested his blood sugar every morning in different situations and his levels were always higher when electrical fields were nearby. On one of the mornings, he forgot to test himself prior to beginning work on the computer. His blood sugar levels were higher than normal, registering around 205 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). But after stepping away from the computer for only ten minutes, his levels dropped nearly 20 mg/dL.

The degree to which electromagnetic pollution affects the body is clearly quite astonishing, and this study illustrates that. But it makes you wonder how many people have diabetes simply because of EMF pollution (and not solely due to their diet or lack of exercise, as we have been taught).

High EMFs gave this woman diabetes

Take the case of the 80 year-old woman whose house tested high for EMF pollution. Prior to installing a system of filters around her house designed to reduce "electro-smog" levels, her blood sugar was high and she was using insulin each day in order to balance her blood sugar levels. After installing the filters (which reduced EMF pollution by roughly 98 percent), the woman's blood sugar levels dropped by 33 percent and her insulin requirements plunged a whopping 75 percent!

This idea that reducing the electropollution of your house could drastically reduce a patient's need for insulin has never even registered in conventional (mainstream) medicine. Yet it could be a crucial understanding for tens of millions of diabetics around the world.

The study mentioned here classifies the type of diabetes caused by electromagnetic pollution as type-3 diabetes. While those with type-1 or type-2 diabetes can also have type-3, the data seems to indicate that a person can also exclusively have type-3 without any overlay of the other two types. In other words, their diabetes may be solely due to electromagnetic pollution.

And since pre-diabetics can be pushed over the edge by EMF pollution, there is no telling how many people actually have type-3 rather than type-2 diabetes.

If you ask most mainstream medical "professionals", they will deny that type-3 diabetes even exists. According to most of them, the idea that electromagnetic pollution contributes to disease is some sort of whacked out conspiracy theory. But there's more to the study that you need to know...

Wireless signals interfere with the heart

For one portion of the study, Dr. Havas had patients lie down on a bed with a cordless phone placed two feet away from their heads. The phone was plugged into the wall, but for each testing session, the electricity was either on or off.

Neither the patient nor the doctor administering the test was aware of whether or not the phone was live or dead during each session. (This is what is known as a double-blind study, the type most respected in clinical trials).

At the completion of that part of the study, researchers observed that EMF-sensitive patients experienced significant increases in their heart rates during the sessions when the phone was being powered and emitting radio signals. When it was turned off, these same patients returned back to their normal heart rates almost instantaneously.

Why is this important? First of all, a double-blind study is the litmus test used in the medical profession to verify that a study is legitimate. Since nobody involved knew when the power was on or off, the results are completely unbiased and hold a lot more sway than if it had been conducted a different way.

Secondly, it illustrates that EMF pollution really does speed up the heart rates of certain people. And since a rapid pulse is one of the many symptoms of diabetes, it seems reasonable to suspect that EMF pollution could be a fundamental cause of diabetic symptoms for a significant portion of the diabetic population.

This makes you wonder about the harm caused by mammograms, CT scans and other medical scanning technologies that blast the body with electromagnetic radiation, doesn't it?

Electromagnetic radiation leads to many diseases, including cancer

Our bodies are constantly barraged by electromagnetic radiation from numerous electronic sources, and most people don't think twice about this high level of exposure (probably because many don't even realize it's there), but the truth is that all this EMF pollution is leading to widespread illness.

Most of the recent research on EMF pollution has focused on cell phones, which makes sense because people take their cell phones with them everywhere they go and when they use them, they often hold them right next to their skulls. Cell phone radiation is probably one of the most dangerous EMF polluters because the devices remain in very close contact with the body for long periods of time.

A 2008 study published in New Scientist revealed that cell phone radiation causes human cell proteins to improperly express themselves. Similar studies also found that the radiation damages living DNA, creates leakages in the blood-brain barrier, and increases estrogen and adrenaline levels, disrupting hormone balance.

According to one statistic from a 2008 study, adults who use a cell phone over the course of a decade increase their chances of developing brain cancer by 40 percent. Even worse, a Swedish study found that people who start using a cell phone before the age of 20 increase their risk of developing a brain tumor by 500 percent!

Mainstream science holds conflicting views (as usual)

Of course, many in the medical establishment simply deny that electro-smog has anything to do with health or disease. And it doesn't matter how many studies are conducted on the matter; many continue to insist that there is not enough evidence that EMFs cause any harm.

Not everyone feels this way, of course, but sadly most of today's experts seem unable (or unwilling) to put two and two together and make the connection between electromagnetic pollution and disease.

There are many contributors to disease in our environment. EMFs represent just one. But to deny that electromagnetic pollution is harmful is quite narrow minded. Dr. Havas' study provides more than enough evidence that at least some people are suffering because of the electrical devices that surround them.

Our world, of course, is full of electromagnetic devices -- and some of them may surprise you. A typical hair dryer, for example, emits an explosion of electromagnetic radiation that's usually aimed right at the skull. Typical office environments shower employees with electropollution from fluorescent lighting, and even exercise gyms can subject visitors to a dense field of electromagnetic pollution (from all the electronic exercise machines).

It all gives credence to the idea of getting into nature more often, doesn't it? If you're sensitive to electropollution, the farther away you get from the city, the better you'll feel. No wonder most people innately gravitate to such natural environments like forests, lakes and ocean beaches.

So, does all this research mean we should all get rid of our phones and computers and return to the pre-information age? You could always join an Amish community. They're remarkably healthy, and part of that may be due to their lack of electropollution.

But for mainstream people, a more practical solution is to install some EMF filters around your home.

Some solutions for electromagnetic pollution

As mentioned in the study, home EMF filters are one of the best ways to reduce or eliminate the stray electrical signals that plague your house. These filters will capture electrical "noise" from things like televisions, computers and phones, and return it back into the line or into the ground. These can be connected to the outlets where these devices are plugged in.

Keeping Wi-Fi devices like cell phones and wireless routers away from your body as much as possible is another good idea. If you have a wireless router at home, place it away from areas where people sleep or spend a lot of time. Even having it just a few feet farther away can make a big difference in a reduction of the electropollution exposure from it.

When charging your cell phone, plug it in across the room from you. Especially at night when you are sleeping, it is best to turn off as many electrical devices as possible and to keep them away from your bed when sleeping. And beware of electric blankets: They produce a very strong electromagnetic field.

Try to use the speakerphone as much as possible when talking on the phone, or use an "air-tube" device that stops the signal short before it reaches your head. Never walk around with an idle bluetooth attached to your head, because these devices deliver a steady stream of EMF radiation directly into your head. I would recommend not using one at all, but if you do use one, take it off when not in use.

It's also a good idea to keep your phone in your pocket or purse only when necessary, and to keep it away from your body at all other times. Cell phones are intermittently communicating with network towers, so the closer they are to our bodies, the more radiation we are exposed to. So if you're not going to be using it for a while, just turn it off.

Finally, it is crucial to maintain a healthy diet and get plenty of outdoor exercise. Eating lots of nutrient-rich foods, drinking plenty of clean water, and minimizing intake of toxic preservatives, food additives, and refined sugars will do wonders to build a strong and vibrant neurological system that will resist some of the impact of electromagnetic pollution.

The reason I mention outdoor exercise is because, just like in the study, certain indoor exercise equipment like treadmills can actually cause more harm than good (for certain people). So go outside and take a walk or a jog. The sunshine will boost your vitamin D levels and the fresh air will help rejuvenate your system. (Just be sure to stay away from the power lines.)
